Sony is dropping the price of the PlayStation VR2. The company announced a permanent price drop for the headset, which has struggled to gain the same excitement as the original PS VR hardware back on PS4. The price drop is effective from March.
In a blog post, the company says the PS VR2 will have a new recommended retail price in different regions. The US price has dropped from $550 down to $399, and in the UK, the headset is dropping from £529 down to £399.
I don’t have the South African price available for you at the moment. However, the PS VR2 is one of the most expensive pieces of gaming tech in our region. Back in 2023, we saw the headset skyrocket in price as it went from the launch price of R13,499 to R15,499.
The new price drop will hopefully bring this back down to a more realistic RRP. I want to say the headset could retail for just over R10,000/R11,000. If you take the old asking price for the UK model at £529 and our previous RRP, you get R25,80.
This exchange times the new RRP in the UK gives you R10,294. So expecting the PS VR2 headset to retail at R11,000 isn’t a far stretch.
The slow adoption rate for the PS VR2 has been mainly due to the staggering price tag of the hardware. Hopefully, this new price tag will get more players on board. The headset recently got PC support, so if you were to pick up the PS VR2, you’ll essentially get a pretty decent PS5 and PC gaming VR headset.
While Sony doesn’t have any first-party games on the horizon for the hardware, the current third-party lineup on PS5 is excellent.
