If you’re on the hunt for a decent gaming laptop on the market packing a 50-series graphics card today, you’ll probably be a bit disappointed to discover that most of them will still cost you an arm and a leg. This is where MSI comes in with the Vector 16 HX AI, a mid-range, budget-friendly and powerful gaming laptop with a 5070 Ti that boasts performance on-par with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 – in some cases, it even outperforms it - and immediately, you have my attention.
For this review, I received the MSI Vector 16 HX AI A2XWHG model with the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 12GB GDDR7 and Intel Core Ultra 9 processor, so it’s no slouch when it comes to guaranteeing you’ll be getting excellent performance across the board.

Out of the box, the MSI Vector 16 HX AI is clearly designed to draw attention to the fact that it’s a gaming laptop. MSI achieves this with a bulky aluminium frame, jagged edges that shout “gamer” and a weighty 2.7kg. It’s not a very thin laptop either with a 29mm height. The vents on the back extend the laptop’s size by a few millimetres, allowing the screen to fold a measurement shy of its vent strip (it’s more of a block, really). As for ports dotted on the side and back of the Vector 16, you’re getting 2x Thunderbolt 5 display ports and 2x USB 3.2 Type-A’s with an SD card reader, audio combo jack and Ethernet port.

Overall, the MSI Vector 16 HX AI’s form factor is ferociously sturdy, bulky and the complete opposite of elegantly designed – it spares no expense in giving you that premium gaming laptop feel without sacrificing any of MSI’s distinct details and touches.
When you boot up the laptop, the screen immediately grabs your attention. It boasts a 16” QHD+ (2560x1600) 16:10 screen with a dazzling 240Hz refresh rate to truly make your gaming sessions pop with vivid, striking colours. I know some people prefer a wider display but for what it’s worth, this doesn’t compromise your games in any way or feel like it is being cut off on the edges (we’ll get to that in a bit). It comes equipped with Windows 11 Home, though MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use, giving it a bit of versatility if you want to take this behemoth into your office and meetings.
The screen compacts at 357mm x 264mm, standing quite tall and proud, with RGB lighting swirling on the keyboard and WASD keys highlighted for that extra “gamer” edge in its layout. It’s a truly impressive display, made bolder by its high refresh rate that makes gameplay glide over silk with its alluring smooth performance.
Let’s dig under the hood of the MSI Vector 16 HX AI. MSI’s OverBoost Ultra tech is going to push your gaming performance just that much further by unlocking the laptop’s CPU and GPU power. With Wi-Fi 7 on board, you’ll also have absolutely no problem getting the highest bandwidth and lowest latency for your online gaming sessions. Playing a few matches of Call of Duty on the laptop, I saw no connectivity issues whatsoever with some of the lowest ping I think I’ve ever seen. Again, it’s all a testament to the power MSI packs into this machine.

For testing, I decided to run Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on the MSI Vector 16 HX AI. Beforehand, MSI really wants you to know just how well the RTX 5070 Ti stacks up against the RTX 4080 – a feat that makes MSI the first brand in South Africa to bring the 5070 Ti to the local market.
Putting it through its paces, I tried to see exactly how much the 5070 Ti measures up to the ultra-powerful 4080 – little did I expect it to actually outperform the 40-series GPU in some aspects. For Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, there wasn’t a noticeable difference minus a slightly improved frame rate, but thanks to the RTX 50 series’ Multi Frame Generation capabilities (something that the 5070 Ti is easily able to output), Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2 looked and ran jaw-droppingly well, comfortably hitting higher frame rates and never dipping below the 90-115FPS averages at 1440p (quite a strain, I know). More impressively, it’s remarkably quiet. The fans kicked in during more intensive testing or while I was flipping OverBoost Ultra up like Dr. Frankenstein, but I barely heard the usual jet engine sounds that accompany such stress tests on other laptops. My hat’s off to the Vector 16’s Cooler Boost 5.
A more genuine question is: is this a worthwhile option for gamers looking to jump into the 50-series era and get value for their money? Absolutely. You’re not only getting a phenomenally designed all-purpose gaming laptop that can comfortably trade blows with the RTX 4080 on a sunny day, it’s also designed to push the limits without necessarily breaking the bank. It may not be the strongest as far as the 50-series offerings go, but it remains one of the cheapest 5070 Ti gaming laptops you can find right now. How much will this set you back? The MSI Vector 16 HX AI costs R63,999 locally – that might sting at face value, but considering what you’re getting out of it, and it’s clear target market being the hardcore gaming crowd, it’s honestly reasonable for the long-term haul.
The MSI Vector 16 HX AI is great value for gamers looking for a powerful, reliable new laptop with strong performance across the board. The 5070 Ti is more than enough to carry your gaming needs and deliver some of the smoothest performance I’ve seen yet, even when put under strain while tinkering with the highest settings in games. It’s definitely catered towards the more devoted gamer who wants a solid, well-designed device that can easily withstand the demanding nature of high-end modern games.
