Just Cause 1 (the back-compat Xbox 360 version)
I feel like I shouldn't complain as it cost R10 on sale but what a waste of some good ideas. Someone was clearly a big fan of GTA3 and figured it would be awesome in a tropical island setting, and then accidentally used the design docket for 1997's GTA 1. For 2006, the world is huge but the quality of missions is abysmal and repetitive to an absurd degree. Mercifully, you can just push forward with the main missions (something I did after 5 hours), with the safehouses offering you all the gear you'll need, but the liberation-base sidequests are so formulaic I feel I should apologize for every bad thing I've said about a Ubisoft game post-AC1.
The simplistic design (kill soldiers, blow up roadblock 1, kill soldiers, blow up roadblock 2 etc.) is probably meant to be offset by the ability to use vehicles/planes/your grappling hook, etc. but the controls suck and the game has weird balancing issues that discourage anything other than combat on foot. Soon as you hop into a vehicle/aircraft, enemies start using rockets which are, 99% of the time, an instant kill; On foot, so long as you're moving, you can soak up dozens of rounds and like 3-4 rocket strikes. Were the game makes the most sense is when you're on a main mission or liberating a large settlement, and revolutionaries and government forces are battling it out around you, with troops/vehicles/aircraft exploding everywhere.
That said, I'm looking forward to seeing how the second game improved the formula (and it only cost me R15).
