Chandra Celebrates 15th Anniversary: Crab Nebula

In 1054 AD, Chinese astronomers and others around the world noticed a new bright object in the sky. This “new star” was, in fact, the supernova explosion that created what is now called the Crab Nebula. At the center of the Crab Nebula is an extremely dense, rapidly rotating neutron star left behind by the explosion. The neutron star, also known as a pulsar, is spewing out a blizzard of high-energy particles, producing the expanding X-ray nebula seen by Chandra. In this new image, lower-energy X-rays from Chandra are red, medium energy X-rays are green, and the highest-energy X-rays are blue.

Rosetta Probe Makes Historic Comet Rendezvous Wednesday Morning: Watch Live

After an epic, decade-long trek across the solar system, the European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft will finally catch up to its target comet early Wednesday (Aug. 6). If all goes according to plan, Rosetta will become the first probe ever to orbit a comet, and you can watch the historic rendezvous live online.

Rosetta is expected to meet up with Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko at 4:45 a.m. EDT (0845 GMT) Wednesday, with a crucial 6.5-minute-long engine burn propelling the spacecraft into the comet's orbit. You can watch a live webcast of all the action here at Space.com beginning at 4 a.m. EDT (0800 GMT), courtesy of the European Space Agency (ESA).

I got a science lession on this entire landing from my 11 year old son...

Did you know ot took the lander 7 hours to land...

This is crazy awesome

I hope the probe has a camera.

Ambition is a short sci fi film created in collaboration with the European Space Agency to celebrate their pioneer Rosetta mission and its stubborn ambition to land on a comet for the first time in human history.

Ambition film synopsis: In the distant future, an apprentice struggles to sculpt the geology of an alien planet. Upon failing, she demands that her enigmatic master give her another chance to prove her skills. Amused, he counters by reflecting on the very dawn of their home world, the origins of life there, and the enduring qualities of stubbornness, adaptability, and ambition that took them into the realm of the gods.

Is she ready to take on the ultimate test?

There are also a lot more serious videos related to Rosetta on the films offical website

I saw these lights floating in the air last night around 10pm.

Got no idea what they are...

The pic was taken with a Blackberry camera, so you get the idea how bright it was.
