Shazam! Movie a go, but without The Rock??
The Hollywood Reporter (THR) has confirmed that filming of the long-awaited Shazam! film will commence in either January or February next year. It feels like this one has been in development for ages (that's because it has been). THR further confirms that the story revolves around a "crippled boy, turned Earth's mightiest mortal" and will be directed by David Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation). An interesting choice in a director who seems to enjoy playing in the supernatural horror arena. While SHAZAM! definitely delves into the supernatural, perhaps DC are again looking to darken the subject material somewhat. I hope not, personally, because this would be at odds with the kind-hearted, naive nature of the protagonist, Billy Batson.
Interestingly (or disappointingly, you decide), a Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson portrayal of antagonist, Black Adam, will not make a debut in the film. The character is apparently being saved for a project that's being developed concurrently to SHAZAM!
The brief synopsis of "a crippled boy", hes me just a little concerned. I can't ever recall Billy Batson ever being crippled, particularly as part of his origin story, making me wonder two things specifically: Are they altering Billy's origin or is Billy Batson even the protagonist of the film, as his name was not disclosed?
I'll file this under 'cautiously optimistic' for now.
