It: Chapter Two Gets Hard R Rating for "Disturbing Violent Content"
It: Chapter Two is a couple of months away, and the anticipation grows each day for our inevitable return to Derry, Maine. Set 27 years after the events of the first It film, the sequel - which adapts the second chunk of the book - sees the Losers Club as adults returning to face the demonic terror that is Pennywise the Dancing Clown again. The trailer already suggested some hefty, disturbing imagery and violence, but now, we have confirmation with its rating that it will be a bumpy ride.

The MPAA has awarded It: Chapter Two with a hard R rating, citing "disturbing violent content and bloody images throughout, pervasive language, and some crude sexual material." This shouldn't come as a surprise as the first film was also rated R, but didn't include some of the more heavy-handed themes that the sequel could potentially hold. It seems like director Andy Muschietti is going all-in with the sequel, perhaps pushing the boundaries of what is possible in an R-rated horror film without going over the edge to an X-rating. The last mainstream horror film to really push its R rating was 2013's reboot of Evil Dead - a fantastically bloody upgrade from the original, if I may say.
We won't know the full extent of the horrors waiting for us until we see the anticipated sequel this September, which will introduce an adult cast of Losers including James McAvoy as Billy, Jessica Chastain as Beverly, Bill Hader as Richie, Isaiah Mustafa as Mike, Andy Bean as Stanley, James Ransone as Eddie, and Jay Ryan as Ben.
It: Chapter Two arrives in cinemas on September 6, 2019.
