DC's Next Animated Feature Revealed
The DC animated films do make up a lot of my TV watching time. While some may miss the mark, more often that not, these movies exquisitely capture the grandeur and wonder of the DC Universe. If there is one criticism I might level at these films, its their (over?) reliance on Gotham's Caped Crusader to carry them. A film like Justice League Dark, for example, didn't suffer because of Batman's involvement, granted, it just failed to reach the heights it might have, had it focused on its supernatural protagonists just a little more.
DC's next outing will again feature the Batman, although it's a version of the Dark Knight that has not yet been committed to the small screen, and will adapt a beloved DC Elseworlds tale, Gotham by Gaslight. The story, featuring art by master illustrator Mike Mignola, and writer Brian Augustyn, introduces us to the Gotham City of 1889, where Bruce Wayne becomes embroiled in the hunt for infamous serial killer, Jack the Ripper.
Yes, DC is relying on arguably their most popular character again, although in my book this decision gets a pass, considering the subject material and its setting in history. And If the animation is set to emulate the dark, brooding pencils of Mike Mignola, I for one couldn't be more excited.
