Nintendo Japan has just confirmed earlier tonight that they are indeed coming out with a new console by 2012.

Add to that, they also confirmed that it will be coming over to this year's E3, up and running and definitely playable for people to see, apart from making the official unveiling.

So far, it's being dubbed as Project Cafe, and is being touted as a console that will be "significantly more powerful" than the current Xbox 360 and PS3 models.

Nintendo's been pretty secretive about it, understandably, but other tidbits that have been circulating the speculations block is that there will be a 6-inch touch screen display, dual analog sticks, and direct-from-console-stream capabilities among others.

If their claims prove to be true, then this just might put Nintendo right back in the consoles race. This is what the fans and critics alike are all waiiting for. It's time to burst that bubble, Nintendo, and show what you can actually still do.

More leaked images of Nintendo's Project Cafe continue to make the rounds on the Internet.

We've got some more of those images here, but unfortunately, we're going to have to classify this under the Rumor bin for now -- at least until we hear something official from Nintendo.



So far, what we do know of Project Cafe is that it's promising to lure in more hardcore gamers -- that demographic that the Wii console largely left out of the loop with their mostly family-oriented line-up of games in their library.

Depends how much stronger this is and whether launch titles will be good.

Reports are throwing around a $350 - 400 price tag, and the PS3 is currently sitting at $299. Software is going to be key as evident by the 3DS's. PS3/ 360 coudl have very strong exclusives comign their way in 2012 making it more difficult for the Wii2.

I think the controller has potential, but Sony's cloud gaming between the PS3/ NGP could undermine it a bit.

WIll have to see what the playable units at E3 are like.

The other issue that this new system has, and I admit to reading about this at Kotaku, is that the PS3 and 360 are still going to be with us through 2014 when the planned replacements are rumored to be released. Third party developers will most likely stick to multi-platform business models and this new system will bear the brunt of that policy in that games will be developed for the technically "weaker" system.

i hope this thing doesnt have motion control or people are gonna be spending a fortune on replacing controllers, i can see this happening with the 3DS as well



i can't say i'm excited for this but it does make me feel a bit better about not getting the 1st wii . but then again who knows, it could be the best console we've ever seen

Some rumours are going around that Sony and MS may even release new consoles as early as 2012 and if they do, they'll be significantly more powerful than the Wii2, which, technologically at least, puts Nintendo right back where they are now.

Even if they don't, its gonna be a hard sell for people to buy a new console that, from a tech standpoint (since it does matter to people) may only have a 2 year lifespan.

I think Nintendo needs to make a seriously more powerful machine and then get 3rd party dev's to develop with a larger range of mature games, since nintendo's image is still very kid friendly. They need to have franchises like DMC on it. That and less shovelware.

I doubt Sony would release a new console just yet, but something from Microsoft is entirely possible. Here's hoping the price of the Wii drops soon as I was never able to justify the cost of what's essentially a secondary console, and it would be nice to play all those Gamecube games I missed out on.

At least they haven't named it the WiiWii.

Apparently the Wii2 will be BC with Wii games, not sure about GC games, but Nintendo have said that much so far, which means that I will most likely pick up the Wii games I want to play and jam then on the Wii2, since that I will most likely buy,

Haven't heard this rumour: I think you mean 2014. 2012 release would mean new consoles being shown at E3 this year and thats not going to happen, especially with Sony who are going to be showing off quite a few PS3 exclusives it seems.

Haven't heard this rumour: I think you mean 2014. 2012 release would mean new consoles being shown at E3 this year and thats not going to happen, especially with Sony who are going to be showing off quite a few PS3 exclusives it seems.

I think 2013 earliest, but it depends purely on how well Wii2 sells compared to competition and whether its extra power makes multiplat/ exclusives look inferior on the 360 and ps3.

a new xbox i can see in 2012 honestly, but unlikely.

Also cant see a new playstation console, especially when there is still a ton for release on both HD consoles.

Still interested in seeing if that ps3.5 upgrade thing will ever come too light or if it was b/s lol.

A new Wii with the power of a ps3/360 id love, if it keeps getting titles similar to the ones its been getting of late. Also they have shown what the wii can do when done right hope they dont mess with it too much

Rumours suggest 25gb disc sizes (bluray?) and only 8gb internal storage.

Thats pretty lame if its only 8gb internal space... better be able to take that out, but then again what HDD is only 8gb? Maybe you cant.

Who cares? some 360's didn't even have a gb storage. If you don't need the storage then why have a lot of space. If PS3 games didn't need to be installed there would probably be a few MB on my machine excluding the DLC titles.

Until we know exactly what the situation is I don't see why anyone should care, it's a console not a PC

Except that the advent of downloadable content is going to be a problem with that kind of space.

That was the exact same problem those 360's you mentioned have: they're pretty much disc only consoles.

And what about other content? People use their consoles to store music, pictures, videos. It really does not matter that they are not PC's, but they official functionality which people use.

8gb internal storage is rubbish, if true.

i heard it will take SD's as well, i've seen 64GB SD memory card online

It may seem rubbish but no one even knows what Nintendo's plans are for it and I'm pretty sure if they are going to go with DLC add on content they have other plans. Too even go "ah that's rubbish" is just moronic until all the facts are known.

The Wii does perfectly fine and I don't even know what the storage space on that thing is, I've always just used it's internal memory for my saves and downloads.

What exactly does the Wii use its internal storage for? Saves and downloads only? Downloads for a SD console are obviously going to be smaller then for an HD console.

Besides I know I am talking about hypothetical's here. I'm saying if it is true then it could be problematic.

Dont see the 8 storage being a issue either, as DP says its a game console not a PC and iv got a ps3 already and a 360 and pc that can all view pictures, all play music, all play video.

And i still use the pc as most people i know. And as Ragna says you can get 64gig and even up memory cards these days and considering the origional wii had a memory card function i dont see this being excluded in the follow up.

If its on blue-ray no surprise next xbox will probably be blue-ray aswell unless they ditch the disc base which would be a probably for backwards compatibility.
