Somebody here watched this movie, never heard of it before. It stars Ryan Reynolds, so gave it a watch. Very good
I recommended it here a little while ago. Great dark comedy
Watched The Martian this weekend, and absolutely loved it It was an amazing sci-fi, with a lot more sci than fi, and a brilliant performance by Matt Damon. Also, it put Ridley Scott back in my good books
The Martian was very good. It was a bit unusual in a certain way that as I started typing this increasingly cumbersome sentence I realised could be a spoiler... I liked it but I came away feeling... weird about it. It's worth a watch, and again.
Run all Night - wow. Nothing original, hitman saving son from mob in act of redemption. You've heard this story a hundred times before but not told like this. Ed Harris vs Liam Neeson. Irish, New York and Christmas = Pogues' Fairytale of New York. Faux 3D cinematography of New York at night was amazing. 9/10
Pixels - Actually a pretty fun and funny film. There is a lot of hate for Sandler these days, some of it deserved, but this was a fun film with a nice nostalgic angle. Sandler's trademark crude humour wasn't on display here, it was very restrained, I don't recall any swear words at all. I think this was his attempt at a family film and all the critics didn't give him a chance.
Jurassic World
Very good!
The movie plays on the nostalgia, from the first one. I think thats why it did so well.
That dino fight at the end was pretty cool!
IT Follows - quite a different take on the slasher style movie, could have been done really well but it's clearly made on a budget and wasn't done as awesome as it could have been.
Paper Towns
I enjoyed this a lot. Not your regular over the top teen coming of age movie ful of sex, drugs and alcohol. More realistic really. The acting was also spot on. 8/10
Tomorrowland
This was ok. It felt like there was a lot more to the story but they probably cut a lot to keep the movie to the already long 130 mins. I liked the themes/messages of the movie - seeking answer and solutions with science and then that people can make huge changes to the world (good or bad). 6/10
The Voices
One word to describe this is Weird, both in the story and the execution. It is marketed as a comedy and the first 30 mins does have an awkward dark humour. That quickly changes and you are left expecting there to be a joke at the end of some very dark scenes, but this never comes. The movie also one step away from taking a very serious perceptive on hearing voices, but doesn’t go there either. Even with the comedy tapering off in the middle they still choose to add a goofy dance number in the credits. Random. On the whole it stays stuck in an uncomfortable limbo of themes/flow and maybe that was what the film makers were going for to create uneasiness and an anxiety in the film. 6/10
