The Wii U is rising in popularity (now that some decent games have been revealed for it), and it's likely that the Wii U version of smash will be generally superior. I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure the Wii U version looks a whole lot better than the 3DS version.
Additionally, take into account that Smash is at it's best when played with other players. This is more easily accomplished with one Wii U than with multiple people who each must have a 3DS, and who each must have a copy of SSB3DS.
