Managed to get some serious hands on time with Doom. I was really on the fence about this initially, what with Bethesda purchasing iD and having them restart everything from scratch, but I can honestly say this game is amazing and my fears were totally unwarranted. iD has surpassed my expectations both with the main game and the snapmap editor, which makes level design easy and fun for people who want to make something playable without having to learn how to use a fully featured engine and create their own assets and content. Multiplayer I haven't spent any time on. There is a 5gb day one patch but I have no idea what it fixes as I haven't done it, which is another reason why I haven't touched the MP side of things.
As for the campaign, it is fast, brutal and addictive as hell. Just stopping to type this is too much time away from the game already
Doom is very much a throwback to old school shooters of yore, in the best way possible. You're going to have to learn how to kill things on the move very quickly as there's no time to take cover or aim down the sights of your weapon. In fact, outside of equipping a tactical scope to the Heavy Assault Rifle, there is no aiming down the sights at all. Forget everything CoD has taught you in the last couple of years. Here it will get you killed. Chances are you're gonna die anyway. Repeatedly. As the game is no cakewalk even on medium.
Level design is built around constant movement and you're fast enough to dodge projectile attacks. Most games sprint, is this games default speed. And when you start to see how fast Imps parkour all over the place and have multiple HellKnights leaping at you from 20 feet away, you're gonna want that speed.
The Glory Kill execution system is more than just a gimmick and is usually the difference between life and death in a fight. Enemies killed in this way drop health for you and believe me, you need every last bit of it. Most encounters have about ten + enemies gunning for you at the same time. It also adds a nice layer of tactical depth to the game as you have to decide how you want to run each encounter. Headshots for quick kills at the expense of health and ammo drops, or glory kills to keep your health up in case a HellKnight or Mancubus gets spawned your way at the end of the fight.
Everything in the game has a use, from the secrets, which help unlock upgrades, to the challenges, to even picking up the environment descriptions. Weapons can be modded and then still upgraded. A serious amount of depth and thought went into this.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to kill some more demon spawn and maybe make a map of my own.
