It will fail to sell at that price. R3599 is almost how much my PS4 cost.

Nope not for me, until I see actual development for it and for the others and can be assured that this won't be another expensive Nintendo Powerglove/Kinect/Move.
I see these things as being just like the 3D TV market 4 years back. Everything was about 3D being the new HD and that all TV shows and films would eventually be 3D. Fast forward to today and besides 3D in the cinemas no-one has any use for the 3D capability on their TVs anymore. Broadcasters have not mass adopted the tech and Blu-Ray releases are still dual medium.

3D and VR are not remotely comparable, especially in terms of software availability.

There are VR games/ apps in development and/ or already released for various devices.

Cardboard (Google smartphones)
Gear VR (Samsung+Rift smartphones)
Hololens (MS, more AR)
Morpheus (Sony for consoles)
OSVR (Razer)
Rift (Facebook backing)
Vive (valve + HTC)
VR for G3 (LG smartphone)

+ AMD and their newly announced Liquid VR software to make VR development easier.

We are seeing VR being used for consoles, PC and Smartphones. A massive far cry from just TV sets with 3D.

Nothing about this is a fad. It has a real driving force behind it. Whether it takes off in the first generation or not is another question, but VR looks like it is here to stay, whereas 3D never had that feeling to its end game.

been waiting for oculus rift for ages now, during that time all other companies announced similar products and now I'm over the hype, kinda looking forward to Hololense now but I'm skeptical to how well it'll work.
I'm pretty willing to pay to own one of these first VR headsets considering I payed R28K for google glasses, too bad I cant find them anywhere.

oh, I almost just purchased a oculus rift available online, its a DK1 though... not sure if I should check for a DK2 or wait for consumer release :/

yeah - I would just be worried that the beta version may not be fully supported by the final products software.

I'm with you. A friend has an Oculus devkit and he says that it is amazing and with Valve, Razer and Samsung jumping in this seems to have some big industry backing. I want to see what the games are like before I make a decision, but I remain highly sceptical.

I used the Samsung VR. It was pretty cool but low tech.

Not exactly reassuring when it comes to affordability unless they're referring to something like the PS Vita -

@Lurch if this thing costs as much as my PS4 then I will definitely pass until very late in the product cycle when it will hopefully have a decent library and had two or three price cuts. I understand that VR tech is more complex and expensive to R&D and manufacture than a controller, but to price it at console prices will probably limit the market for the thing even more than it already is.

processing unit does “most of the heavy lifting” when it comes producing low-latency images. The same is also being done for audio processing. The external unit supports 3D binaural audio.
