Then I'll just drive an unlicensed car. When a cop pulls you over, just make sure you have enough money to buy him a Happy Meal at McDonalds and he'll let you go. The government will just enforce corruption and ppl taking illegal steps to avoid paying E-Toll.

The government says these things should work on the "User Pay" principle. Well in that case, why does my Tax Money go for Government schools, RDP housing, Government hospitals etc. I don't use them, so why must I pay for them. Give me back that money and I'll happily pay E-Tolls!

Just be careful as an unlicensed car is considered not roadworthy and thus your insurer will repudiate any claims you make. IIRC third party and RAF will also repudiate if the vehicle license has expired.

I will drive to the nearest testing station and have my car cleared as a roadworthy vehicle, this is the exact reason the government will find it hard to implement this "bullying" tactic. You cannot classify a persons car un-roadworthy because he doesn't pay e-tolls, a testing station will prove that the car is roadworthy, what then?

It is not the government that considers your car unroadworthy it is your insurer. Read your contract, if your vehicle is not licensed they have an exclusionary clause allowing them to repudiate.

Sure...but you are entitled to have a roadworthy test done by a testing station of your insurers choice, as there may be many reasons you couldn't get a license (Out of Town, Lost Your job and didn't have money, Forgot to renew etc) ONLY a testing station can determine whether a car is roadworthy or not. As long as you can prove your car is roadworthy, then no insurer can dispute your claim. That's why you get certain codes as to why your disk was not issued. You cannot tell me an insurer will dispute a claim because you were refused a license disk because you didn't pay e-tolls. You'll have companies and ppl sue the crap out of insurance companies.

Years ago they said unpaid license fees will also affect your license disc purchase, if you don't pay them you can't get a license. I 've had R4000 in unpaid fines since 2005, yet every year I get my license. They can't implement this, makes no sense!

Firstly they have to pass/modify the law, which then can/may have to pass constitutional muster.

Secondly it will not work. What if you, who say never uses the e-toll, get a bill for R10,000. Just pay it so you can renew a road license?

Thirdly you will never receive SANRAL invoices or license renewals because the Post Office has collapsed.

Just buy a new or second hand car every 11 months

@Morschee - you just need to phone insurance company and say I am unable to renew my license due to a dispute with SANRAL. Do I need to bring the vehicle for an inspection, send a AA report, do a roadworthy test or take my business elsewhere. Trust me the answer will not be the last option.

a License disc means jack[censored]. Take a Taxi for example, they buy it today, after a year it has cardboard for brake pads, bold tyres, oil leaks everywhere, no spare wheel and the list goes on and on, all you need to do is go and renew a license, no check nothing...so how can a disc determine anything tbh. Thus, make sure you look after your car, should you be involved in an accident, then just get your roadworthy certificate from a reputable testing station, I cannot see an insurer disputing a claim with a valid roadworthy certificate in your hand

LOL according to the Business Day you will still be able to renew your annual license, 'they' will just withhold the disc.

If you renew the disc you will get a receipt - if they withhold it or not. Receipts work just fine at road blocks. Or am I missing something here?

yeah - it's just breathtakingly stupid. How can you fine someone for not having a road license when they do have one but you kept it from them because they 'owed' another third party money.

On 702 this morning, insurance companies said that they will NOT revoke insurance claims on cars without license discs due to disputes with SANRAL, as long as your car is roadworthy and a certificate can be provided by a reputable testing station

“We see it much the same as if you haven’t paid a traffic fine. E-tolls would be exactly the same kind of sphere; it’s not material from a roadworthiness perspective of a vehicle. So whether that licence disc is up to date or not, it wouldn’t impact the payment of a claim.”

Just renewed my so another 12 months of using the freeways that I have already paid for.

PS Post Office is now withholding disc for outstanding aarto fines (Jo'burg(?) and Tswhane)

JOHANNESBURG - The Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) says its application to declare e-tolls illegal is now being considered by the National Consumer Commission (NCC).

Earlier, the party disclosed that it has asked the NCC to declare e-toll bills illegal.

The party says it’s discovered that the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has not followed proper procedure in certifying the cameras recording motorists number plates.

The FF Plus says Sanral applied for an exemption but this was denied.

The party’s legal head Anton Alberts said, “We basically asked them for two remedies: to declare all e-tolls bills illegal until the e-toll instrumentation complies with the Legal Metrology Act and, secondly, those who have paid would be entitled to have their money back.”
