I've spent most of the day ignoring work and playing through it so here you go! If you found some love for
Of Orcs and Men and
Mars: War Logs, this is Spider's best and most refined RPG to date. I don't think it'll ever compete against major studio games like The Witcher, Dragon Age or Fallout, but it's definitely good and finally covers all the basics (plot, gameplay, presentation) without any glaring weaknesses.
It feels like they took the premise of
Mars: War Logs and expanded it into a full sized game. For the first 6 hours, dialogue is even decent (with minimal cringe-worthy lines), although their treatment of female characters is still dubious.
Gameplay gives you far more options than their previous RPGs, including a simple talent tree that gives more dialogue options, lock-picking, stealth takedowns, and other non-combat options. Combat is a lot faster version of their light+heavy attack system with blocking or rolling to avoid damage. Having 3 effective classes, and Technomancy "magic" to supplement each one, keeps it way more interesting. I'm sure the game is going to bite me in the arse later for spreading my skills too thinly, but switching between combat styles is quick, effective and fun.
Major issue in the opening hours is the interesting prologue, followed by a dull city setting (think Mass Effect 1's Citadel visits). About to head out again though, so looking forward to some more interesting ruins or outdoor areas if the prologue was anything to go by.
