If you get far enough in the game you don't need to use real money, but in game credits for your monthly subscription. It's Play2win and not Pay2winSuper cool idea. Never played EVE as I know I will lose my soul to it - it looks that immersive
Games Like EVE for instance are great as they also allow for the monthly payment to be done with ingame cash but the sheer amounts you would need mean that all your game time must be spent making enough money each month, and it often takes players 2-3 months before they can even do that.

I will compare FXIV: ARR here to a F2p game.
FFXIV:ARR Has not even been out for half a year, we have already had over 6 special events, one of them involving other Square games.
Patch 2.1 is already out which adds a whole lot to the game and patch 2.2 is around the corner.
Everyday there is something entirely different to do, whether it's your duty roulette quests or your beast tribe quests. Along with the treasure hunts if you are a gatherer.
Compared ot most F2P MMO's or Pay once where it is like here is game, you can buy more powerful[censored] if you want.
Uuuh yea wait till an expansion or something.
-------------
Don't get me wrong, for me to actually pay to play the game has to provide for it Like WoW and FFXIV:ARR do. There have been plenty pay to play mmo's out there with monthly fee's and it's literally just to hold your character slot.

SorryI read this in a hurry (long day). My bad. 2-3 months seems like nothing though in an MMO world. That is about R600 in subs.

I'm a fan of the once off payment option. You buy the game and you buy the expansions. Any thing else you want to buy within in-game auction houses is up to you, yet you have access to everything you need from the beginning that doesn't break the game or turn it into a pay-to-win experience.
Like Guild Wars does.
Most, but not all, F2P games cripple you badly if you choose not to subscribe or purchase in game items. If you want your investment back that badly, instead of blackmailing players into buying things otherwise they won't get anywhere in any sort of reasonable time, then charge a once off purchase fee or just go subs.
If a game is really fantastic, like Old Republic or Realm Reborn, then I'll consider subscribing.
