Rumours surrounding the PS6 continue to escalate and one has players very curious: a new handheld codenamed ‘Canis’. Reports claim it won’t be a streaming handheld device like the PlayStation Portal but its own console, so somewhat of a successor to the PSP and PS Vita. The latest report now claims that Canis packs a GPU more powerful than an Xbox Series S.
Known leaker KeplerL2 recently posted about the PS6 handheld on NeoGAF, claiming Canis is “massively ahead” of the Xbox Series S in ray tracing and path tracing. Additionally, the leaker touched on PSSR3 when talking about Canis, comparing it to Nintendo Switch 2’s upscaling. “Switch 2 only has DLSS 2 (CNN) and some games even use worse ‘DLSS Lite.’ FSR3/PSSR3 will be better IQ than even current DLSS 4.5,” they said.
The rumoured handled will apparently launch alongside the PS6. Not much is known about the device beyond these rumours, though KeplerL2 also claims that it will utilise shared binary compatibility in order to run PS5 games. Another hardware leaker, Moore’s Law is Dead, claims it will be more powerful than both the ROG Xbox Ally X and Nintendo Switch 2, complete with a MicroSD slot, 16CU RDNA iGPU closed at ~1.20GHz in handheld mode and ~1.65GHz in Docked Mode.
Here are some of the specifications mentioned by Moore’s Law is Dead, but keep in mind this is merely a rumour and nothing has been confirmed by Sony yet:
- Monolithic ~135mm2 Die manufactured on a TSCM 3nm Node
- 4x Zen 6c + 2 x Zen 6 LP (6 Cores Total) w/4MB of L3 for the Zen 6c CCX
- 192-bit LPDDR5X-8533 Memory Controller w/support for up to 48GB of RAM
- 16CU RDNA iGPU closed at ~1.20GHz in handheld mode, and ~1.65GHz in Docked Mode
- Backwards Compatibility to PS5 and PS4 Generations (no mention of PS3)
- Canis includes a MicroSD slot, M.2 SSD Haptic Vibration, Dual Mics, and a Touchscreen
- Manufacturing planned for mid-2027, with a likely Fall 2027 Release Date
In case you missed the previous report, here are some of the rumoured specs for the PS6 main console.
