Hey everybody

Happy November

Do we perhaps have an ETA on The Outer Worlds 2 - Premium and Tales of Xilia?

Just recently finished Dying Light The Beast, absolutely fantastic and I would recommend it for a zombie parkour game, looking forward to future entries if there are

Review: EA Sports FC 26

A game of two halves.

by Jarred Milner on 08 October, 2025

Thirty-five years. That’s how long I’ve been playing football games, since Goal! on the NES, through the many offshoots, PES, and of course, the first FIFA in 1994 on SEGA. Since then, I’ve played every iteration of EA’s football series, including the old World Cup and Euro spin-offs. Now titled EA Sports FC, it marks over three decades of playing this franchise. And yes, the old “it’s the same thing every year” comment isn’t lost on me, yet somehow, I still need it. EA Sports FC 26 is the latest, and that need is as strong as ever.

EA Sports FC has come a long way over the years, particularly since the rebrand. The series has evolved dramatically, especially with the introduction of online modes, Ultimate Team, and the more recent Rush mode. There’s now something for everyone, no matter how you prefer to play.

Historically, FIFA’s major selling point was its official licensing, while the gameplay was often questioned. With its main competitor moving in a different direction, EA has been able to refine and expand its game without constant comparison. The ongoing challenge has always been balance: between playstyles, online vs. offline, and realism vs. entertainment, all while keeping the engine smooth (or smooth enough).

Gameplay and New Styles

I’m happy to say that EA Sports FC 26 provides more variety and balance than ever before, thanks to the introduction of two distinct gameplay styles. FC 25 dabbled in this, but EA has now refined the idea significantly.

Competitive Mode stays true to EA Sports FC’s high-tempo core, full of pacey, tricky players, with defending often an afterthought. Online modes, including Ultimate Team (FUT) and Seasons, default to this setting, so it’s essential to master it if you play competitively.

The series has evolved dramatically, especially with the introduction of online modes, Ultimate Team, and the more recent Rush mode.

FUT remains fast and chaotic. Defending is still possible but harder than ever, and matches often end with high scores. As someone who has always prided themselves on solid defending, it’s a little disheartening to see that aspect take a back seat; you’re generally better off just trying to outscore your opponent.

That said, it makes for thrilling, end-to-end football. The freedom to pull off skill moves and score highlight-reel goals is immensely satisfying (without condoning toxic celebrations/watching replays, of course). Matches feel dynamic, and when the servers behave, it’s pure entertainment.

Authentic Mode, on the other hand, caters to those who prefer realism. It slows the tempo, gives teams distinct playstyles, and makes tactical adjustments feel impactful. The AI, both teammates and opponents, is noticeably sharper, making matches more strategic and grounded.

At times, however, it veers too far into sluggish territory, particularly when the AI endlessly passes along the back. For purists, this may feel right; for others, it can be frustrating. Still, it’s a clear improvement for players seeking a more realistic experience.

Modes and Features

Outside the new gameplay options, EA Sports FC 26 brings a few meaningful upgrades. The FUT interface is finally more intuitive after years of clutter. Silver cards and competitions have regained importance, adding depth and variety. Evolutions return for a third year, better explained and more impactful, which is a welcome change for newcomers. The negative side to FUT remains too with microtransactions, “pay-to-win” aspects and the return of the awful premium pass to unlock better items the more you play. Even worse is unlocking items that go through into career mode or other offlines modes. It’s unnecessary.

The FUT interface is finally more intuitive after years of clutter. Silver cards and competitions have regained importance, adding depth and variety.

Rush, the 5v5 mode, returns with refreshed commentary and the option to play as goalkeeper. It’s still largely the same but remains one of my favourite additions in recent years; short, skill-based, and perfect for quick sessions.

Career Mode Improvements (and Frustrations)

Career Mode has received some interesting tweaks. Live Mode introduces dynamic challenges throughout the season, reminiscent of Football Manager. In my first campaign, I dealt with player conflicts, board interference (they sold one of my key players despite my refusal), and shifting budgets. It’s engaging, unpredictable, and adds meaningful tension.

That said, some aspects are showing their age. Pre- and post-match interviews are painfully shallow, with repetitive and often nonsensical dialogue. Transfer negotiations and cutscenes remain stiff and outdated. These need either a complete overhaul or removal altogether.

Presentation and Extras

The other familiar modes, Seasons, Pro Clubs, and Kick-Off, all return with minor refinements. Commentary hasn’t changed much, and the soundtrack is hit-or-miss (one track in particular feels like being stuck in an endless loop).

A nice new touch is the updated HUD, which now displays players’ weak-foot and skill-move ratings under their names, a surprisingly handy feature, especially in online play.

Final Verdict

EA Sports FC 26 doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t need to. Instead, it offers more choice in how you want to experience the game. Competitive Mode will delight those who love fast, attacking football, while Authentic Mode caters to players craving realism and tactical depth.

For me, it’s bittersweet. The shift toward pure pace means defending feels undervalued, and that balance once again eludes EA. Still, it’s the most diverse and entertaining iteration yet. Expect to concede often, embrace the chaos, and you’ll have a blast. Fail to adapt, and prepare for the rage.
