Gamers in The UK, US and Japan Still Prefer Single-Player Games According to Survey
trying to shove PvP and PvPvE down our throats. A new survey shows that gamers in the largest gaming regions in the world still prefer to play single-player games and would choose a solo game over a multiplayer game when given the chance.
Ampere Analysis surveyed 34,428 players across 22 markets around the world and found that 58% of UK gamers preferred single-player games over multiplayer games. In Japan, this number was even higher at 63%, and in the United States, 65% of gamers preferred single-player games over multiplayer ones.
Other markets included in the survey range from Thailand at 62% and Germany at 60%. However, not all markets voted “yes” for single-player gaming. Some markets, including China and Sweden, actually chose multiplayer games.
China voted at 47% for single-player games, and Sweden at 49%, meaning the players surveyed said they would prefer playing multiplayer.
The survey also showed that age plays a big role in the decision. 49% of gamers aged between 16-24 said they preferred single-player games. However, players between 25-34 saw this number increase to 56%, and ages 55-64 rose to 64%. So the older you get, the less multiplayer games you tend to play.
The report says that this large percentage in age differences shows a clear divide between Gen Z and Millennials in terms of tastes and perspectives.
The survey also shows that players tend to jump into multiplayer games only if their friends are playing too. 24% of gamers said they would download a multiplayer game if their friend was playing it so they could play together.
Ampere senior research manager Louise Wooldridge said:
“This data reaffirms that single-player games are absolutely still viable – and sought-after – in the live service-dominated landscape. The market favours multiplayer games for their ongoing engagement and monetisation, but cracking a finely balanced formula for single-player games can leverage this broad audience appeal. Although most gamers prefer this content to multiplayer experiences, the friendship circle still plays a significant role in game discovery and uptake.”
