I'll suggest some 2016 indie titles -
Salt and Sanctuary is an excellent and shameless 2D Dark Souls clone, just with more focus on platforming in some areas.
Hyper Light Drifter is a tough isometric hack-and-slash game requiring quick reflexes and a ton of exploration.
Both the above titles have outstanding visual design and amazing soundtracks to boot.
If you're looking for something relaxing,
Dear Esther is the original walking simulator and you just stroll and beautiful island while a narrator slowly reveals the tragic story.
The Bunker is an FMV-style game in the classic sense - click on the environment to find clues and move between scenes, infrequent QTEs - and tells an entertaining (if slightly predictable) sci-fi horror story.
Virginia is possibly the least interactive game I've played in which you nudge along the story but often have no control except to shift your viewpoint as the action unfolds. What is does so well is to hintat the narrative while generating emotions and tension with stylish visuals, simple animations and a great soundtrack.
