On ADSL, which ISP would you recommend, and why.

ADSL, I can blatantly say, STAY AWAY FROM MWEB. They are useless. I have not been able to play a single online game on my 4mb/s premium uncapped line. Bungie blames my ISP, so to does Activision, and EA, yet MWEB says there is no problem on their side.

I use Openweb for ADSL. I have an old uncapped, unshaped package and average about 250GB per month on Dl's and gaming and not once have they given me[censored]. Some people say that the service is awful and that they aren't truly uncapped or unshaped, I have to say that never happened to me.

Um you guys are going to hate me for saying this...Telkom (yes Telkom). and pretty much the same experience as Maguis' Openweb one.

Have only had good service from them.

I can second this - been using Telkom uncapped ADSL for years now and, on the few occasions I have had issues, they've either resolved it on their side over the phone or quickly dispatched a technician to fix our external lines.

My main account is with VOX. I have Afrihost prepaid as a backup and then a free 1gb SAOL account (comes with my line) as my backups backup. With VOX I have a Bolt-on ADSL account that is only R59 per month for uncapped usage between 6pm to 6am weekdays and all weekend. Until recently I have been about 95% satisfied with the quality of the account (which was fine since it is dirt cheap), but now it seems that with Netflix that they are experiencing over capacity issues in certain areas (like Gauteng) which makes the account unstable and they appear to be shaping now even though the product is unshaped. Real bummer but they are apparently addressing the issue. They don’t offer Bolt-on with a new account anymore but their Fatpipe capped deals are very reasonable and offer uncapped for 12am-6am. It was a bit of a mission to sign up with VOX a few years ago. No idea if they have changed this. Their general support service is ok, but the rep on MyBroadBand has been very responsive on the forums there so if all else fails help can be found there.

In my experience Afrihost are very reliable, high quality and are excellently priced. They are very highly rated on their support and customer service. I do find it extremely easy to manage my account through their website. I would likely be with them if my Vox account wasn’t so cheap.

Greencom are rolling out fibre in my area and I will likely move to that. It will be less then what I currently pay for a 4mb line (my areas exchange is shocking) + the VOX account, but at 10mb and uncapped anytime. Looking forward to it

My only issue with fibre at the moment is that no ISP offers uncapped accounts. They are all capped with the highest one been 50GB that I have seen. even Openweb don't offer uncapped and I can't transfer my current package to Fibre. I guess FTTH is relatively new and in a year or two we will start seeing uncapped fibre packages.

Other issue is that in my area MWeb/MTN (i can never remember which) have brought their FTTH online first and they won't allow you to use a different ISP and just rent the line from them. We have Neotel, but that is just for businesses and Telkom are busy in our area as well as one other provider.

Edit: checking their site now and I see they are not in Randburg so I guess it depends what area you are based in

ISPs in the cape town area are super competitive.We have a bunch of smaller guys which have monopolized certain districs and towns which make it difficult for the bigger companies to do business. Dont even get me started on internet in security complexes here. Some of the body corporates only allow you to have internet from a specific provider etc.

On VUMA's network, there are multiple ISP who provides uncapped, but I will be going with Cool Ideas. My fibre line should be installed by the 29 February this year

But only if your ISP is Telkom. I also thought it was everyone with an ADSL line, but it's their Retail operation (ISP) doing the trial and not the Wholesale (line provider).

Like many other Internet Service Providers, Telkom’s Retail arm procures its fibre connectivity from infrastructure wholesale provider Openserve which sells its fibre infrastructure based on an open access model to all interested ISPs. I have been using them for 2 years now on 4meg uncapped standard and i've had no issues at all.

There really is no reason not to sign up...

And your line rental?

The 50MB download and 5MB upload uncapped package is R999 at Cool Ideas and the 50 down 50 up is about R1050 or something. Those both include the line rental from Vuma.
