Ok… here we go! I think I am a geek.

I love to play games, I read a lot of comics, and I collect “toys” figures. I know every word from the Star Wars movies of by hart. My son and I start an argument in the middle Pick n Pay as to who will win in a fight – Yoda or the Hulk, while everyone is looking funny at me.

I am turning 40 at the end of the year, and I know what Adventure Time is and can name a few of the Pokémon characters.

I still buy, build and play Lego…


However, I am over six feet and weight over a 110 kg. Was for 5 years in the military and served in the parabats and in special operations. After that I worked for French Security Company all over the world.

And if I got any extra free time left I play paintball...

The word has mostly lost it's meaning.
Geek used to mean virginal loser, obsessed with obscure cartoons nobody watches.

Watching Star wars makes you an outcast, but the Kardasians, jersey shore and snacks and the city does not?

Just feels like once you lable something, you get certain "rules" that get taken out of context. E.g. thick glasses, quoting Montey Python, social outcast. Then you get people trying to use the rules to be something they are not.

Geeks used to be losers, for sure. But thanks to the internet and great hang-outs like AWX, we realised there are a lot of us out there, and there is no need to be shy about it.

I'm a gamer/movie/metal music/marvel/DC/PC/gadget geek. I'm a walking wikipedia on the subjects. and i'm damn proud of it.

Here is an exmaple of my geekdom...'
When the first Pokemon movie was released on cinema, i was the only person in the cinema over 10, i was 18.

Im a geek to, 90% of my time is spent playing games or working with pc's love anime and manga, not much of a comic book person (never had it when i was young, shocking i know)

I still play pokemon to this day and love tetris. Play magic and lan every 2nd weekend.

Slightly off topic: Just watched X-Men first class again a few days ago and whenever someone says "Geek and Proud" I hear Mystic says "Mutant and Proud" in my head

On topic: Following what I said in the poll - I am a geek and proud of it The majority of people on the site will feel the same way. But going back to the discussion in the chatbox, it is difficult to clearly define the term. There are so many different kinds of geeks (computer geek, game geek, comicbook geek, starwars geek, anime geek… the list goes on) and with geekdom becoming more and more mainstream does everyone have a geekiness in them or is it just a pasting trend for some?

I don’t like labels but if a duck is a duck then it’s a duck It’s when we apply stereotypes to those labels that it becomes a problem. Like Woofels said in the poll comments - not all geeky people live in their parent’s basements. Teb also mentioned, in this thread, that thick glasses not always being a trait. The same can be applied to any sub culture. I am sure you can find gym bunnies that still live in the basement.

I love collecting sexy anime figurines I watch one or two anime series a month if they catch my attention (usually i go by recommendations from ppl on this forum ) and i play one or two games at a time, never platinumed a game though but try to finish the ones I start at least...
So i guess technically i am not really a geek (at least not the same level as some ppl)

Geek and proud of it too Some people hate labels but let's just be serious for a second... Humans are herd creatures, and we like to feel like we belong. If it takes a "label" to show what culture we identify most with, than labels are fine by me lol. I do agree with Corrosive it's when stereotypes start getting applied that problems arise.

But yes I would say I'm a geek. I've loved Star Wars on a obsessed level since I was 8. Before that I was completely obsessed with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I owned action figures, even though they "were only for boys". I got Barbies as gifts and spent ages dressing them as Queen Amidala (I was 12 when Phantom Menace was released).

If anyone had to find themselves in my flat it would be kind of obvious too... Apart from the two PCs (mine and DP's) the laptops, the DVD and game collections, there are also things like a plushie collection on one couch (Darth Vader, R2D2, an alien, a panda, a hedgehog and pig from Angry Birds). My bobblehead collection lives on top of the fridge, there's a bookshelf filled with figures, manga (mostly DP's) books (mostly mine) and comics. Oh and the other couch is where the giant Darth Vader plush backpack sits.

Seriously, there is no doubt about it.

Re: the whole "real geek" thing... It annoys me too how people are turning it into a "fad". Seriously, if you really enjoy geeky hobbies and spend your time on them because u genuinely love them, then welcome.

But the people that try and use it as a fashion statement or to seem "different" or "quirky" makes me want to punch something.

well depends ... i dont know what makes me a geek but it makes apart of who i am

im a sci-fi, and horror fan... like stargate,startrek .. so on uno the whole lot of them .. i cant get enough of an over imaginative story and fantasy, and with horrors b rate and all

i used to play a ton load of games when i was a kid... i play alot less now ..but ive played most genres im a gamer first aswell... im an artist and crazy... i cosplay... i love my computer ... and tech

i like alot of things that other ppl find childish.. and that they dont do... like most of the things that my coworkers dont do i do ... like the stuff i was saying...

oh then there is anime and manga and sub culture.. and im a graphic designer pc type hahaha

maybe this stuff doesnt make us just branded geeks but also advanced tech ppl the new generation of ppl
