The Batman: Here's What Paul Dano's The Riddler Actually Sounds Like
Matt Reeves' The Batman remains one of the most anticipated upcoming superhero films, largely due to the talent attached to the cast and crew, and the legacy of DC's most famous masked detective. Back in August at DC FanDome, despite having shot only a portion of the film, Reeves showed off a lengthy teaser trailer for The Batman that introduced us to Pattinson's suit, and the rogues gallery on display including Catwoman and Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin. The antagonistic star of the show will be The Riddler played by Paul Dano, but what does he actually sound like in character?

We may have seen The Riddler - in a decidedly more creepy get-up duct-taping one of his victims - in the trailer, but we also got to hear an audio clip of the villain menacingly telling Batman the riddle "If you are justice, please do not lie. What is the price for your blind eye?" The voice is obviously altered to sound deeper and down-pitched, but YouTuber Mike Choe has now taken that audio clip and fixed it by turning up the pitch so that we can hear Dano's actual voice as The Riddler, and this is what it sounds like:
Paul Dano definitely sounds the part of The Riddler, which should excite fans (including myself). He brings a vulnerable and kind of annoying tone to The Riddler, but also somehow walks a fine line of being completely menacing and calculated at the same time. Certainly not as irritating as The Riddler from Rocksteady's Arkham games, this version is aiming to be a much darker take on the iconic antagonist. As Reeves explained, he's actually a serial killer in this film that Batman and the GCPD must hunt down and put an end to his taunts and riddles aimed directly at Bruce Wayne/Batman (historically, The Riddler is one of the only villains to figure out Batman's true identity). It will be interesting to see how that's integrated into the story.
The Batman releases on October 1st, 2021.
