Phantom Blade Zero director Qiwei Liang has revealed some interesting new details about how the action game’s AI will work. Unlike most action (or Soulslike) games that force players to study and learn a boss’s attack patterns, if you’re planning on tackling the game’s higher difficulty, the AI will apparently work like a fighting game to learn and adapt on the fly, mixing things up so you can’t rely on memorising patterns anymore.
Speaking in the latest issue of PC Gamer Magazine, Liang explained how the AI will work in Phantom Blade Zero. The developer remains adament that the game isn’t a Soulslike, though it’s willing to give daring players quite a challenge with its harder ‘Hellwalker’ difficulty mode. Liang specifically mentioned a boss from the game called Huangxing. “In normal difficulty, he has some of the Soulslike elements to him: he has fixed combos, and if you fight him enough times you’ll figure out his combos,” he stated.
Liang then explained how this boss’s AI will learn and adapt while battling players on Phantom Blade Zero’s extreme difficulty. The director said the team “tried to borrow a concept from fighting games and incorporate it into his AI.” According to Liang, Huangxing will “analyse the situation he’s in and whether it’s to his advantage or disadvantage and that lets him use different attacks based on the situation.”
Liang added, “we have a state we call ‘lucky draw’ where if he lands a hit he’ll continue a combo, but if it doesn’t hit, he’s gonna do something else. He tries to use the result of his last attack to determine what to do next.”
Basically, this means that on the higher difficulty, Phantom Blade Zero’s bosses will be a lot more unpredictable and difficult to read because their attack patterns will be changing constantly to adapt to the player rather than the other way around, creating a PvP-like experience. Thankfully, players who prefer to tackle the game on normal or the lower difficulty settings will be able to read and memorise boss attack patterns more safely.
Phantom Blade Zero is currently in development for PS5 and PC.
