I found out about most of my favorite artists, bands & composers though stuff like movies & games.
For example, I really liked the music in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (both the movie and the game). The song me & my friends liked the most was the song "Black Sheep". I researched it a bit & found out that Metric made that song. I instantly fell in love with the band's music.
Also, I found out about Anamanaguchi via the Scott Pilgrim game
I knew about The Beatles since I was very little, but the Anime Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad made me want to hear more of them. The Beatles is my all time favorite band now Beck: Mongolina Chop Squad also introduced me to Beat Crusaders.
I (like most people) really found the end credits songs for Portal 1 & 2 awesome. Once again I did my research and found out that Jonathan Coulton wrote both songs. He's pretty much my favorite solo artist
A recent example I can also use is Guardians of the Galaxy. I want to buy the Soundtrack now since the music is just a list of purely awesome oldies

TV shows have awesome tracks these days from unknowns, friends and things I just pick up around the place. Unfortunately film soundtracks are dead and radio plays the same[censored] over and over. I have had occasion where I have switched between 5 and 94.7 to get away from a song and they are playing them in sync! UJ's station used to be great for non pop stuff, but they switched to pop and hip hop about 4 years ago. Tuks is the last rock station around, but even in Sandton the signal is weak.

I have to agree with you all. I find most of the new music that I like from tv shows, movies, games or youtube (vids and recommendations).
I started using this website, http://www.rdio.com, to stream music for free, but the recommendations have not really grabbed me at all. Maybe I just need to give it more time to learn my tastes.
