Xbox Confirms Next-Gen Console ‘Project Helix’- Runs PC and Xbox Games
New Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma has gotten ahead of any leaks and rumours by confirming its next-gen Xbox console is codenamed Project Helix. Sharma also revealed, as previous rumours suggested, that it will run both PC and Xbox games as a sort of hybrid system. Sharma added that the team is meeting with developers next week during GDC to discuss the new console.
Asha Sharma posted the news on X, confirming that the next-gen Xbox console will be codenamed Project Helix. This is the first time that Microsoft has explicitly mentioned that its next console will be a hybrid PC device outside of older reports indicating it would utilise AMD Magnus technology and be capable of playing both PC and Xbox games, likely similar to the ROG Xbox Ally handhelds which let you tap into your Xbox library and Game Pass.
Sharma stated on social media:
“Great start to the morning with Team Xbox, where we talked about our commitment to the return of Xbox including Project Helix, the code name for our next generation console. Project Helix will lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games. Looking forward to chatting about this more with partners and studios at my first GDC next week!”
Microsoft is already gearing up to start discussing its next-gen plans, it seems. This generation, Microsoft had been trailing far behind Sony in terms of console sales. While the PS5 continued to dominate charts, Microsoft quietly pulled away from putting much focus on the Xbox Series X/S. In fact, the infamous “This is an Xbox” marketing campaign – which was apparently spearheaded by former Microsoft president Sarah Bond – arguably did more damage to the brand than good.
Analysts predict Sony could extend the lifecycle of the PS5 this generation, pushing out the launch of the PS6 to a later year. It’s unclear when Microsoft plans to release Project Helix but it will likely be targeting a 2027 release.
