Yesterday, the internet got a dose of potentially exciting news: Silent Hill is not dead, and will indeed return as two new projects. One is speculated to be developed by The Medium's Bloober Team, while Konami outsourced the IP to a "prominent Japanese developer." There's been plenty of speculation online as to who this could be, but we have our own few theories about this mysterious Japanese developer. Firstly, Video Games Chronicle writer Andy Robinson shut down Kojima Productions as one of them, so we will unfortunately not be including them on the list. That said, there's more than a few that more or less fit the bill...

SIE Japan Studio
Probability: 90%
When the first rumours of
Silent Hill began, SIE Japan Studio was the company mentioned to be developing a series reboot as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. This rumour likely still holds weight, making Japan Studio the most likely candidate for who this prominent Japanese developer could be. As some may already know, Japan Studio consists of former Team Silent members who developed the original four
Silent Hill games. Until a few months ago, this also included
Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama, who broke off to form his own studio, Bokeh Game Studio - they're working on a
new horror project right now.
While Toyama isn't involved in Japan Studio any longer, some Team Silent members still remain there. Toyama could've also completed his work on the
Silent Hill game before he left. Japan Studio aren't exactly new to horror either, as they previously developed the
Siren series. Seeing as they're owned by Sony, and the earliest rumours pointed to this
Silent Hill game being a PS5 exclusive, we're fairly confident that it's them. In the off-chance that we're wrong, what about...
Koei Tecmo
Probability: 50%
Koei Tecmo might seem like a weird choice since they're mostly known these days for Team Ninja's glowing
Nioh and
Ninja Gaiden titles (as well as
Dead or Alive), but they do have some roots in the horror genre. Particularly, they developed the
Fatal Frame series, which is recognized as one of the best horror franchises in gaming. If Koei Tecmo does have the
Silent Hill IP, then we can expect something along the lines of
Fatal Frame's sinister atmosphere and panache for extremely disturbing imagery. It's almost a perfect fit. Unfortunately, Koei Tecmo doesn't seem like the likeliest option since they've all but left their horror days behind them, but we'll throw them in the mix anyway. Speaking of unlikely options...
Tango Gameworks
Probability: 30%
Tango Gameworks really exploded into popularity when
Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami broke away from Capcom to form this studio. Tango Gameworks, who currently fall under Bethesda and ZeniMax Media's umbrella (keeping in mind the Xbox acquisition too), previously developed
The Evil Within series and the upcoming
Ghostwire: Tokyo, so they're no strangers to horror. However, what would make this particular choice ooze irony is the fact that
Silent Hill would be handled by
Resident Evil's creator - and seeing the two franchises competitive history, it would certainly make for a funny story. We doubt that Tango could be involved in this
Silent Hill reboot, but it's worth throwing it out there. But not throwing it as far as...
From Software
Probability: 10%
Despite the ongoing memes about From Software's current situation with the mythical
Elden Ring, we've seen their name thrown out in the midst of this speculation. Of course, the Soulsborne developer currently has their hands tied with
Elden Ring, but some theorize that they also made space for
Silent Hill in the last couple of years. Interestingly enough, From Software have tackled horror in some shape before in the form of the PlayStation title,
Shadow Tower, which was more of an action-RPG with plenty of horror elements. We'd also mention that
Bloodborne is essentially drenched in Lovecraftian horror, so it's not like they aren't familiar with the genre. However, as far as believability goes, a
Silent Hill game developed by From Software is about as unlikely as
Bloodborne 2.
These are just our picks for "prominent Japanese developers" we think might be involved in this
Silent Hill project. While it's merely just a report for now, it does come from a pretty credible media outlet, so we simply have to wait until this summer to see if we're absolutely right about one of these - or entirely wrong and should be put in the corner.
