The Weeknd Teases Something Sonic-Related Ahead of The Game Awards

by Sam Aberdeen on 05 December, 2025

Pop/RnB singer The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye) is seemingly teasing something related to Sonic The Hedgehog ahead of The Game Awards next week. The artist’s Instagram recently started posting photos of Michael Jackson and Sonic as the late king of pop made music for the Sonic franchise in the 90s.

X user ODrightbesideme posted a collection of stories uploaded by The Weeknd recently, showing Michael Jackson at various Sonic events in the 90s. Jackson notably produced music for 1994’s Sonic The Hedgehog 3 with tracks like “Ice Cap Zone”, “Carnival Night Zone” and “Hydrocity Zone.” The Weeknd, whose singing voice has been closely compared to Jackson’s, seems to be following in his footsteps.

It’s speculated that The Weeknd could be producing music for an upcoming unannounced Sonic The Hedgehog game ahead of The Game Awards, which is scheduled for 11 December. It’s possible that SEGA could announce the new Sonic game at the event and also potentially confirm The Weeknd’s involvement in its music – at least that’s the popular theory right now.

Some of The Weeknd’s most recognisable songs include “Blinding Lights”, “Can’t Feel My Face”, “Save Your Tears” and “Starboy”, which was produced in collaboration with French electronic music duo, Daft Punk.

Rumours surrounding a new Sonic game have been heating up recently with many expecting SEGA to make a surprise announcement at The Game Awards this year. Meanwhile, Paramount Pictures continues to ride the success of its Sonic movie franchise with the fourth movie planned for 2027 and an untitled spin-off scheduled to release in December 2028.

In other news, SEGA says it will begin using AI sparingly in game development but it’s fully aware of the pushback it might face from developers. The company assured creators that it will only use AI tools when appropriate, though it won’t encrouch on creative fields like character and concept artists.
