It’s no secret that the Wii U wasn’t a commercial success. We could delve into exactly why the home console didn’t receive an overwhelming uptake but that’s a subject for another day. Regardless of the console’s sell through it still managed to have some outstanding title, especially when looking at first party exclusives. On the other hand, it also had some poorly developed shovelware which didn’t harness its unique features. Let’s consider the best (and worst) titles that the Wii U had to offer.
Best game played on the Wii U:
The saddest thing about the Wii U not being more successful is the amount of people that won’t experience some of its stand out titles, especially from Nintendo’s own developers. Pikmin 3, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Bayonetta 2 and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze are just a few titles that jump to mind.
The console also had its share of HD remakes with the likes of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD becoming available for those that missed out on these titles during the Wii and Gamecube era’s.
What would a Nintendo console be without its ‘Mario titles’. Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Super Mario Maker and New Super Mario Bros. U not only saw the iconic hero once again take centre stage but were also some of the best games to feature the character.
Nintendo are known for having outstanding swansong titles towards the end of a given consoles life cycle and this brings me to the best Wii U title, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Yes, the game was also a launch title for Nintendo’s Switch but who said the Wii U’s best game had to be an exclusive? From the moment you first see Link to the games climax you are engrossed by the games visuals, battle mechanics, puzzles and pure scale. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a near perfect game on a sadly under-appreciated console.
