There are still plenty of people out there who don’t really even know what a role-playing game (RPG) is. And then of course the majority of those who do would probably say something like “Oh, you mean D&D (Dungeons & Dragons)?” Well, yes, ‘like D&D’, which is still the most well known RPG around, but it is by no means the only one! There are hundreds of them. Nearly as massive a variety as there are in board games, or computer games (okay, maybe not anywhere close to the variety in computer games, but still, we’re talking hundreds of different games).
And each different game may have many differences or similarities to other games, in the same way as with board games or electronic games. There are different rules systems and different themes. Different settings and different mechanics. There are even RPG’s that focus on different styles of play. Really, there are so many options out there, and it’s not to say that D&D is a bad one, not at all, but that’s only one franchise, and there’s really no reason to not try others too.

One of the players takes on the task of being the Game Master, while all the other players will take on the role of a heroic character in the game.

Some players enjoy the aspect of dice rolling in a game, and most RPG’s do still use dice in some way. But that can also put other players off...
