While we’re still waiting for WB and DC to hit a consistent quality stride in their live-action movies, we can at least continue to look forward to their animated adaptation counterparts, a medium in which they’ve – more or less – been killing it.
The latest DC graphic novel to be adapted for the screen is the phenomenal Elseworld title, Superman: Red Son. On the chance that you may not know, DC’s Elseworld line was a way for their artists and writers to explore different takes on their characters and properties that they couldn’t do within the characters' main titles. Some truly classic and amazing stories came out of this line including, but not limited to, Kingdom Come, JLA: The Nail, Superman: Red Son, Batman & Dracula: Red Rain and many others.
Eventually, DC folded the Elseworlds imprint into their main universe with the creation of the multiverse, making many of these stories and worlds canon. Unfortunately, it mostly spelled the death of some truly creative stories.
Superman: Red Son reimagines Superman’s origin story so that, instead of landing in Kansas as a baby, he lands in Russia. That’s all you’re getting in the way of story from me as this is truly a must read title, and now that the first trailer is out – courtesy of IGN – quite possibly a must-see adaptation as well.
Check out the trailer below and start counting the days off until 2020 when the movie is expected to be released. A firm release date has yet to be finalised.
