Square Enix is Heading to Tokyo Game Show 2021, But Don't Expect Final Fantasy XVI
Tokyo Game Show 2021 has been confirmed for later this month, bringing together talents from around the globe - including Japan - for an event dedicated to the latest and greatest games from Japanese and worldwide publishers. Xbox has already confirmed their presence at the show, but now Square Enix has joined in by announcing that they will feature a new Square Enix Presents at Tokyo Game Show - that will likely lack Final Fantasy XVI.

Square Enix Presents has been announced for Tokyo Game Show 2021, where we'll probably see updates for upcoming games from the major publisher. These may include Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker and more. However, their biggest upcoming game remains Final Fantasy XVI. The game was last in the spotlight in 2020 when it appeared at PlayStation's Future of Gaming event, but has since gone quiet. Square Enix has stated that development is coming along well for the game, but you shouldn't expect it to appear at Tokyo Game Show this year.
Speaking during a recent Final Fantasy XIV stream, Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida stressed that development deadlines meant that it they wouldn't be able to put something together for the virtual event. Yoshida said:
"We really want to show something for Tokyo Game Show 2021, but we probably can't make that deadline… we definitely want to show it, but isn't it better if when we do, you're able to play it right after? I personally don't like it when small bits of info is release to string people along. I talked about this with the team and director Takai-san. We want to reveal something where people will say, ‘I want to play it now! Release it now!' And we can reply, 'sure, here you go!"
Final Fantasy XVI has reportedly been in development for a few years now, with some speculating that it could launch in late 2022. However, at the rate in which games are being delayed due to the ongoing global pandemic, we expect it might be delayed further. Other than that, Square Enix also has yet to discuss Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2, another highly anticipated title that might be a few years off from release.
Final Fantasy XVI is currently in development for PlayStation 5 and PC.
