Sega has filed a trademark for Shadow The Hedgehog, leading many to believe that a remaster or a new game could be on the way. Shadow has been getting a lot of time in the spotlight lately thanks to Sonic x Shadow Generations as well as his popularity in the third Sonic movie, where he was voiced by Keanu Reeves.
As reported by Sonic City (via The Gamer), Sega’s latest trademark appears to be for ‘Shadow The Hedgehog’, filed as a Class 9 (game program) and Class 41 (education/entertainment), mentioning “computer programs downloadable via the internet.” The trademark is vague and could mean anything, though many are hopeful that this is a sign of a new game being in the works, or a potential remaster of the original PS2 title.
Shadow The Hedgehog debuted in the Sonic franchise with 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2 before getting his own self-titled game in 2005 for the PS2, Xbox and GameCube. The game was slammed by critics at the time but it has since become somewhat of a cult classic, featuring Sonic’s familiar 3D platforming mixed with Shadow’s unique tendency to use firearms in combat. There’s no way to play the game today unless you have a physical copy and one of the older consoles, so a remaster would be welcomed.
On the other hand, it’s possible that, given the recent popularity surge of Shadow thanks to Sonic x Shadow Generations and the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 movie, Sega could be working on a brand new title for the black and red mascot. The timing is right and there’s room to continue expanding Sonic’s game universe as some of its side characters are arguably just as beloved as Sonic.
As with all rumours, reports and potential trademarks, this is just speculation so take everything here with a grain of salt until we get confirmation from Sega.
