I have a love-hate relationship with RPGs from French developers, Spiders. On one hand, they’re a small team that create RPGs with interesting concepts, unique worlds, and a lot of ambition. On the other hand, they’ve repeatedly made design choices that feel both dated and, more often than not, are frustrating. Of Orcs and Men was a fascinating “corridor” RPG, almost entirely linear, but sporting an unexpected take on a common fantasy cliché, complex characters, and hybrid turn-base/real-time combat. Mars: War Logs was an interesting proof-of-concept, a mini-RPG with a tiny budget, short run-time, little polish, but plenty of ambition. Bound by Flame was rough, despite building on previous mechanics and presenting an interesting world; the story was half-baked, ending before it began, and the characters repulsive - sprouting dialogue littered with near-juvenile swearing incessantly.
I had started to lose hope until they released The Technomancer, a full-length RPG that followed on from the events of Mars: War Logs. Once again, their ambitious story - full of shocking reveals and betrayals - did a lot to offset the frustrating map design and back-and-forth quests. I'm happy to report - three years on - Greedfall represents their most polished and well-designed RPG to date. Sure, it can’t match the visual standards of some “AAA” titles, and yes, it carries some Spiders baggage, but the reliance on tried-and-tested design results in a game that feels classic, rather than dated.
Player choice, both with regards to their own skills and relationship with other factions, comes first and foremost.
There’s a lot to consider and your path through the world, along with your ability to solve quests, is limited by your character build.
The diplomatic element revolves around maintaining relationships with the several factions... with a good amount of flexibility in quest outcomes, some light betrayal, and plenty of lying.
Enjoys games with awesome stories and characters, along with new and interesting hardware. Dislikes day-one patches and driver updates.
