Routers, we all have them and unless we have connectivity issues, we never give them a second thought. For 90% of users the cheap, but functional routers we get with our ISP contracts are good enough. However, you should rethink that. Cheaper routers may be functional but can be the reason your download and upload speeds are not quite what you expected. The Asus Zen WiFi AX just may be the solution this problem and the two-pack reviewed here adds a little sweetener on top.
In the Box
The overall package contains little for such a big box. However that is all you need. In the box you get two routers, their power cables, an ethernet cable, some warranty documentation and finally the all important quickstart guide.
The routers are understated, not a WiFi antenna in sight. The package I received had the routers in white, an attractive and in demand colour these days. Checking the Asus website, you can pick black ones and if you are someone who maybe does not dust around your router often this may be the choice for you.
The understated aesthetic is a plus, no weird and wonderful antennas making the router look like some mechanical and upturned spider. This router will fade into the background and one of the Asus videos I found on Youtube had the user place the router on a bookshelf where it blended in seamlessly.
Why Two Routers?
You may be asking, why buy the two pack? The answer is simple, either router can form part of a WiFi mesh system designed to extend your WiFi signal across a claimed 510 square meters. For most of us the extended range is not necessary, but if you have a double story with a concrete floor or you do have a large property, extending your wifi range is essential.
A Mesh system is a significant upgrade on the old WiFi extenders you can buy. Extenders are just signal repeaters i.e. they take the WiFi signal from your router and just pass it on. Generally an extend requires you to setup your main WiFi network and a second one on the extender. The drawback to this system is that you have to manually switch between networks as you pass from the weak coverage of one to the stronger coverage of the other i.e. it is not a seamless handover as you move around the house with your cellphone, laptop or Switch.

...as soon as I plugged in and setup, the app on the phone informed me that there was a firmware update available.
