Welcome, readers, to the latest edition of Question of the Week. Last week I asked the team which game they thought would get the highest review score in 2018. This week, though, it's something completely different.
For this week I asked the team which one character from a game they would like to hang out with for a day, and why. Please note that Lynley, Andrew, Adam and Byron were too scared to give me an answer, probably because they would have all chosen Juliet from Lollipop Chainsaw... so better we don't hear from them. Here is what the rest had to say:
Sam - Pagan Min
Besides the risk of being detained and held captive in a war-torn country, Far Cry 4's Pagan Min seems to be the ideal person to have some interesting conversations with. As the main villain of Far Cry 4, he arguably set the bar for villains in Ubisoft's Far Cry series - not counting the obviously insane Vaas Montenegro. Pagan Min is never overtly painted as the stereotypical "villain" of the game, though, so getting into his psyche and trying to understand his twisted view point on morality is something that intrigues me a lot.
His persona may reflect that of The Joker in some cases, but the dictator of Kyrat seems to have unique perspectives on what it means to be a leader, even if it borders on the totalitarian. Essentially, spending the day with him - presumably in Kyrat too - would be like a journalist sneaking into a dictatorship and sitting down for tea with the supreme leader. Tell me that wouldn't be one of the most memorable (and probably last) conversations you'll ever have?
Garth - Link
One thing for sure is that over the years there have been hundreds of influential and interesting characters in the gaming universe. This week we consider which character we’d choose to spend an entire day with. The list could go on and on; imagine having a quiet cup of tea with Kratos from God of War or attending a few anger management sessions with Trevor Philips from Grand Theft Auto V?
For me, I’d like to spend the day with the infamous hero from Hyrule, Link.
Sure the conversation wouldn’t be stellar (HEY LISTEN - Ed), but the adventure would be unforgettable. Having said that I’d probably choose to sit out on getting lost in dungeons and being attacked by giant grotesque eye-balls. Smashing every pot in sight and tormenting random chickens does interest me for some strange reason, though! Maybe afterward we could join Mario and friends for a few laps of extreme go-karting.
Douw - Commander Shepard
Gosh, what a question this one is. Most characters come with so much world-ending baggage that bringing them here or joining them in their worlds would be less than pleasant... Whether unleashing the sands of time, or secret organisations out to off everyone's favourite raider of tombs, deciding on who to hang out with is no easy proposition. On the complete opposite side, how would my first Sim cope with life in the real world without someone telling them what to do? Would civilization's nuke crazed Gandhi be a good choice? Would he just denounce everyone, or worse?
Guess in the end the risk would just have to be worth it and considering how much I enjoyed the series, a day spent with Commander Shepard would have to be my choice. If only for the chance for them to declare that "My name is Commander Shepard and the Geek of All Trades Podcast in my favorite Podcast"
Jarred - Dante (DmC)
I had to think quite a bit about this answer. Nathan Drake and his adventures would have been an obvious one. Then there's Lara Croft who is tough as nails, and Ezio who is the ultimate assassin, not to mention almost the entire Mass Effect 2 cast. The choices are difficult.
The answer for me though? It's Dante from Devil May Cry. Those guns, weapons, combo moves plus his ability to enter the different worlds means it would be one adrenaline-fueled day. The main reason though? His sarcastic, facetious, condescending humour is my favourite, and spending a day listen to him trash talk others would be awesome.
There you have our answers, please feel free to share yours below!
Sarcasm and irony are his greatest tools, sport, adventure and shooting all the fools. Platformers =admiration, horror games = contempt, plans to live forever or die in the attempt.
