PS5 Sales Down in May By Over 33,000 Units But Still The Best-Selling Console
The PS5 was May’s best-selling console but the hardware has dipped in sales compared to May 2023. The console sold an impressive 289,885 units in May 2024 putting its estimated lifetime sales at 24.31 million units in the Americas.
PS5 sales compared to May 2023 are down, however. The console sold less 33,536 units marking a 10% drop year-on-year. Compared to April 2024, the console also sold 16,000 units less units.
Nintendo is still doing quite well considering the Switch is now over seven years old. In May, the company sold 136,494 units bringing its lifetime sales to 53.43 million units. The Xbox Series X/S sold 131,095 units reaching 17.36 million units sold since launch. People are also still buying the PS4 with 918 units sold in May 2024. Total sales for the PS4 are now at 41.54 million.
When we look at year-on-year sales for the hardware, the Nintendo Switch has dropped 85% compared to last year May. Sales are down a staggering 398,515 units. Keep in mind that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom launched in May 2023 so the dip was expected.
The Xbox Series X/S saw a 25% drop compared to May 2023 with 45,809 fewer consoles sold. The PS4 is also down 85% with 5,550 units.
When it comes to overall sales, total year-on-year spending is down by 6%. Year-on-year console content spending is also down by 40%.
Ghost of Tsushima was the number 1 selling game in May followed by Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. Helldivers 2 is still 2024’s best-selling game and ranked #4 in May. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 which launched in May entered the charts at #37.
Mat Piscatella also reports that the PlayStation Portal was the best-selling accessory in the United States in May. However, accessory spending has dropped by 8% compared to May 2023. He says that hardware sales are worse than expected. This is attributed to both the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S at their peak and the Nintendo Switch holding on with its life. In order to surge the industry, new hardware is needed.
