Something strange is happening on the PlayStation Network, as PS4 games are apparently beginning to appear as PS3 games. Some have cited it as a possible PSN bug, but others believe it could be Sony testing the systems for the rumoured backward compatibility that they will be introducing as part of their Game Pass competitor.
As reported by Exputer, many PlayStation players are reporting a strange bug where PS4 games are instead showing up as PS3 games on the PSN. The error shows trophy progress as 0%. Interestingly, this error only shows up on PlayStation 5 consoles. One NeoGAF user even provided an image clearly showing all their PS4 games as blank with no trophy progression. Last week, many PS3 games even began appearing on the PlayStation store outright, so the timing of these “errors” is quite coincidental.

This bug is apparently present on the PS App too, meaning it’s not an issue just tied to consoles. The likely scenario is that this is just a bug that PlayStation will need to address at some point, but there’s also the question of whether or not it’s linked to the rumoured backward compatibility of Sony’s Game Pass rival subscription service, which is reportedly in the works. This service will seemingly provide users access to a library of PS1, PS2 and PS3 games as part of the package.
As with all rumours, take this with a grain of salt for now. PlayStation have yet to officially confirm that they are working on backward compatibility outside of a few suspicious patents. Given the success of Xbox Game Pass, it’s only a matter of time when PlayStation will respond with their own subscription service or serious competitor. Giving players access to their historical library is quite an enticing offer, and would certainly be a fitting retaliation for Microsoft’s recent massive acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
For the time being, PS4 and PS5 owners can still enjoy a handful of classic PS2 and PS3 games via remasters or hand-picked selections on the PlayStation Store. It’s a far cry from the offerings of Xbox, but it’s something to tide players over until we get some kind of confirmation from Sony.
