The wait for the long-rumoured remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has reached critical levels at this point, with fans eager to return to the Imperial province of Cyrodiil with updated visuals and gameplay. According to reliable insider and journalist Jeff Grubb, we’re pretty close to the finish line as he now claims that the Oblivion remake will shadow drop sometime next week.
Speaking on a Giant Bomb podcast recently, Grubb revealed that the Oblivion remake will shadow drop in “the week of April 21st”, putting its reveal and release somewhere within next week. Grubb couldn’t say specifically which day it will be announced but we now have a time frame to go on. As with all rumours and reports, take this with a pinch of salt until we have confirmation directly from Bethesda.
There’s been a steady build-up of rumours suggesting that the Oblivion remake would launch this year. Reports about the rumoured remake first surfaced back in July 2023 from a now-deleted Reddit post, so make of that what you will. The post claimed that the remake was being developed by Virtuos Games, the same company behind Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. The post also mentioned that it would mostly be built in Unreal Engine 5 but paired with “the old Oblivion” engine, assuming this means the original Gamebryo engine which would later evolve into Bethesda’s in-house Creation Engine.
Alleged gameplay details about the Oblivion remake leaked earlier this year from a former Virtuos employee, suggesting that the gameplay will see minor and major improvements on almost all fronts. The ex-employee claimed that the HUD, stamina system and archery combat would see significant changes and tweaks along with updated visuals to bring the classic RPG into the modern era.
The long and anticipated wait for The Elder Scrolls 6 continues as Bethesda Game Studios is currently hard at work on it, though we wouldn’t mind a blast from the past to keep us occupied in the meantime.
