Nosferatu Director Says His Werewolf Movie is ‘The Darkest Thing’ He’s Ever Written
Director Robert Eggers previously announced that his next movie, following last year’s award-nominated gothic horror Nosferatu, will be a werewolf movie simply titled Werwulf. The movie will be set in medieval 16th century England and depict old English dialogue as it was back then. However, Eggers has doubled down by stating that this will be ‘the darkest thing’ he’s ever written – no small feat considering his filmography.
Responding to a fan on X, Robert Eggers revealed, “It’s a medieval werewolf movie. It’s also the darkest thing I’ve ever written, by far.” Eggers was the writer and director behind movies such as 2015’s The Witch, 2019’s The Lighthouse and 2022’s The Northman. He also wrote and directed Nosferatu. Many critics and fans have called his filmmaking style quite unique for the horror genre, though he also has a tendency to depict pretty dark and disturbing scenarios.
If Werwulf is going to be his darkest movie yet then we can’t wait to see exactly how dark it gets. After all, there’s a surprising lack of good werewolf movies in the horror genre despite so many efforts appearing almost every year. If anyone can break the curse and deliver a solid thrill ride about lycans in its rawest form, it’s probably Eggers. The movie is scheduled to release on 25 December 2026.
Nosferatu released last Christmas but had a delayed release in South Africa, arriving in local cinemas nearly a month after its release in other countries. The gothic horror, which stars Bill Skarsgard as the titular vampire alongside Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult and Willem Dafoe, is currently up for four nominations at the Academy Awards including Best Cinematography, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. According to early buzz, it’s the fan-favourite to win Best Cinematography as well as Makeup and Hairstyling.
