Nintendo has surpassed 150 million Switch units sold since launch back in 2017. The company updated its sales figures on the Japanese console web page, announcing the milestone. Keep in mind that this figure includes stats up to 31 December 2024, so it could likely be a bit higher than 150 million. However, given the Switch’s lifecycle and the looming launch of the Switch 2, the January sales are likely quite low.
The 150 million unit milestone is a big deal for Nintendo. Reports claimed that Nintendo was originally gunning for the number back in 2024 as it aggressively pushed promotions around the Switch console range. Some reports claimed that Nintendo was even holding off on the Switch 2 reveal until the company could confirm the 150 million mark.
The Switch 2 is now Nintendo’s best-selling console and second-best-selling portable gaming hardware in the company’s history. The gaming device is behind the Nintendo DS at 154 million units and in front of the Nintendo Wii at 101 million units.
In terms of software sales, the Nintendo Switch has surpassed everything the company has released in the past. Nintendo says Switch software sales are sitting at 1.3 billion titles to date. To put this into comparison, the Nintendo Wii only managed to nudge over 920 million.
The Nintendo Switch is still a bit behind the PlayStation 2, which still holds the crown at 160 million units sold in its lifetime.
Nintendo is expected to showcase and release its Switch 2 console in the coming months. The hardware was announced in January with an April 2025 Direct stream which will be fully focused on the console and software. The company is gearing up to sell 20 million Switch 2 units in the first year of release.
Nintendo has opened up registrations for users to get hands-on with the console around the world. These events will kick off in April and lead into May. You can check out the full schedule here.
