Nintendo Switch 2 Will Be Backwards Compatible – Report
A new report claims that Nintendo’s next console, for the moment referred to as the Nintendo Switch 2, will be fully backwards compatible with the original Switch. The report goes on to mention that not only will it support the original Switch’s physical cartridges and digital content, it will also enhance games from the previous system thanks to additional processing power.
Universo Nintendo, which accurately reported on Directs and Nintendo insider information in the past, claimed that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with the Switch, supporting physical and digital content. This is great news as it means you can easily carry your library, data and collection of games over to the new hardware. This also gives analysts some credibility who previously called it an “iteration” of the Switch rather than a completely new system that Nintendo often brings with each generation.
Furthermore, thanks to the additional power behind the Switch 2, it will be able to “enhance” games, though it’s unclear to what extent. Back in September 2023 during Gamescom, it was rumoured that several media outlets got a secret demonstration of Nintendo’s next-gen hardware running an enhanced version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as a tech demo. If the specs are as impressive as the leaks claim, we could be looking at upscaled versions that boost games to 60FPS with visual facelifts.
Last month, Bloomberg reported that Nintendo is planning to ship around 10 million Switch 2 units in its launch year, which checks out considering the enormous popularity of the console. As it stands, the Nintendo Switch has sold 139 million units, making it third best-selling console of all time behind the Nintendo DS at 154 million units sold and PS2 holding the top spot at 155 million units sold. Nintendo recently announced that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold over 20 million copies.
