Given the fact that a lot of people have gotten their hands on the demo recently, plenty of players tried to prod at the slice of Anthem for its story components. A lot of it made little-to-no sense due to the fact that we were chucked into the middle of it all. But what is the story of Anthem?
If you don’t know what Anthem is about, it is an online loot-and-shoot RPG. BioWare promises your own personal story, like all their games, but you also get online co-op missions with up to three friends in your squad. So far, it's basically Thanos meets the Avengers, except the Avengers are all Iron Man.
The Anthem of Creation
On the Alien world, known as Mirrus, the Gods that started building vanished. The planet was left unfinished and wild. The Gods, known as the Shapers, used the Anthem of Creation to build the world.
When they left the world behind, they also left the Anthem. The power and rage of the Anthem remained active and fluctuates throughout the world. This power has twisted the landscape, the wildlife and the weather itself. Shaper technology is scattered across the world and has caused the destruction of landscapes and whole civilizations.
What is the Anthem, you may ask? Well, it is basically the force behind everything in Mirrus. It is somewhat an omnipresent sort of magic, that powers everything including our Javelin. This unknown force is what everyone in Mirrus wants to get their hands on. The residence of Fort Tarsis want to study the Anthem and Shaper Relics to learn more about its abilities to create and destroy, but The Monitor (Anthem’s bad guy) wants to create “peace through force”. He wants to use the Anthem to bring a new order to Mirrus and will use any means necessary.
Anthem’s story basically has the player going in as a Freelancer in order to uncover the past, see what is currently unfolding in Mirrus, and stop the Monitor.
The Legion of Dawn
The destructive power of the Anthem destroyed countless groups of Humanity and even wiped out whole civilizations. Humanity was at the Mercy of the Anthem, until one cracked into the Anthem's power. Under General Helena Tarsis, Arden Vassa created the Javelin of Dawn, the first Javelin, and protector of the people. Thanks to the aid of one of her followers, the disciples of Tarsis came together with her and hence the creation of the
Legion of Dawn.
Using these suits, Tarsis lead the Legion of Dawn against the raging world and pushed back the darkness to provide a moment of peace for humanity. Helena Tarsis gave her life to protect humanity but her memory lives on in Fort Tarsis, a stronghold built to defend humanity. The Freelancers also came from the Legion of Dawn, who were once heroes but are now a dying breed.
Factions: The Good Guys
Within Fort Tarsis, there are several factions that help keep the Fort alive.
The Sentinels, The Protectors of the Fort's civilians and the upholders of the law, come equipped with Javelins of their own. So far, we have only seen them in less powerful Javelins than that of the Freelancers.
The Freelancers, Those who venture away from the Fort with Javelins to protect humanity, silence shaper ruins or make some money.
Corvus, the diplomatic group within the Fort that focuses on diplomacy, gathers intelligence and prevents problems as quiet as possible, sometimes in a more messy fashion.
Cyphers are those gifted with telepathy and intensely trained to communicate using that ability while also running complex calculations and processing vast amounts of information. Cyphers support the Freelancers while they are out in the field.
The Arcanists are the science monks of Anthem. The focus on the study of Shaper technology and the pursuit of knowledge. Many players have familiarised themselves with Mathias, and his peculiar actions.
The Heart of Rage: The Bad Guys
Several centuries after General Helena Tarsis pushed back the Darkness, a new threat rose. A faction from the north, known as the Dominion, marched into Bastion in an attempt to rule over it. They were lead by Doctor Harken, who primarily focused on using the Anthem of Creation for their own power. While using this power, Harken causes the destruction of the city Freemark and the creation of a power that neither they nor the Freelancers could control, the Heart of Rage. Freemark became a massive storm where Titans rose. The Dominion vanished after this attack and the Freelancers were dispatched to shut down the storm. When they failed to do so, their reputation and years of honour vanished and the Fort lost their respect for the Freelancers.
With that in mind, you should have a better idea as to what happened in the demo. The world of Anthem, according to BioWare, is meant to be an ever-growing, changing world, where players get to explore every section of Mirrus. The story remains solo, but venturing into Mirrus can be done with your fellow Freelancers.
Anthem may have a story, but this doesn't seem to be a very story-focused game. In our playthrough with the VIP Demo, you get a sense that you're meant to come together with your friends, more than you're supposed to sit inside Fort Tarsis learning about the mysteries of Anthem. That being said, BioWare has taken the time to create this rich lore, and we will get a chance to look deeper into it at launch.
