The upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 movie isn’t even out in cinemas yet and Warner Bros. has already greenlit the third movie, seemingly confident that it will do well as a trilogy. The sequel to 2021’s live-action Mortal Kombat movie reboot released to mostly mixed reviews but fans are optimistic that a second movie – which adds Karl Urban as Johnny Cage along with a bunch of other familiar characters from the games – might be able to outperform its predecessor.
Variety reports that Mortal Kombat 3 has been given the go-ahead by Warner Bros. and New Line. The announcement was made over the weekend at New York Comic Con where the cast, consisting of Adeline Rudolph, Karl Urban, Martyn Ford, Simon McQuoid and Tati Gabrielle, took the stage to reveal that the third movie is already in the works. Jeremy Slater, who wrote the sequel’s screenplay as well as Moon Knight and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, will return to write the screenplay for the third entry.
“Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so happy and excited with this movie,” said Slater at New York Comic Con. “They are so convinced that there is a giant fanbase waiting for it that they already hired me to start writing the next installment of ‘Mortal Kombat.’”
The Mortal Kombat 2 movie was originally set to release later this month but Warner Bros. announced that it had been delayed to 15 May 2026, possibly to capitalise on the summer blockbuster window and stand a chance at a higher box office intake. The first movie released both in cinemas and on streaming services simultaneously in the midst of the global pandemic, crippling its box office potential. However, Warner Bros.’ release date shift shows confidence that the sequel will be better-received and draw more audiences in.
