Your remaining missions have you rescuing downed pilots from Monte Cassino - the monastery, not the gambling den. The music in this stage is hair-raising. Then you're taken on the V1 Buzz Bomb sites. Oy. So much kaboom. You get to make your escape on a commandeered with a motorcycle and sidecar. And yes, you’re on gunner duty. Let the party begin! Ride, gun and then jump off. What?! Yes indeed, you get to run off and blow up some more V1 launchers because apparently these things are harder to eradicate than that Gestapo infestation I mentioned earlier. Still, here else would you get to see such lovely scenery? While blazing away with a mounted machine gun… Besides Afghanistan, I mean?
And now, the time has come… You’re going home. Paris. A captured communique informs you that Hitler has ordered the city’s commander Dietrich von Cholitz to burn the city lest the Allies win it back. Luckily, said General doesn’t really want to have that kind of behaviour attached to his name. I mean, how would he ever get a restaurant reservation again? The shame! What would the neighbours say? The real Von Cholitz would later return to the Paris hotel which was his former head quarters. He was recognized by the head barman. There was no malice exchanged. The man said that the former general was wandering around in a daze. He was never tried as a war criminal as there was never any supporting evidence he took part in atrocities. He did say of his actions:
"We all share the guilt. We went along with everything, and we half-took the Nazis seriously instead of saying "to hell with you and your stupid nonsense". I misled my soldiers into believing this rubbish. I feel utterly ashamed of myself. Perhaps we bear even more guilt than these uneducated animals."
