Destiny developer Bungie finally unveiled Marathon, its upcoming PvP team-based extraction shooter, over the weekend confirming the game’s release date alongside the first gameplay trailer. New details were also revealed about the game which will launch later this year on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Marathon players will take on the role of a mercenary who trades their human form for a biosynthetic shell with unique abilities and stats. Players will form crews of three to battle up to 18 other players in various zones. At launch, Marathon will include three maps, though Bungie stated that more will be added in future updates. Bungie also didn’t mention a price point except confirming that it won’t cost $70 but it will be “premium” priced, suggesting a $40 tag like Concord or Helldivers 2.
“From the creators of Halo and Destiny comes Marathon, a team-based extraction shooter. Choose your Runner and scavenge the lost colony of Tau Ceti IV for fortune, power, and answers to Tau Ceti’s secrets,” reads the game’s official description.
As an extraction shooter, players must fight over loot which needs to be successfully extracted. If a team dies, other players can collect their loot. Bungie revealed that Marathon won’t require full squads to enjoy, though it will make matches a bit more challenging.
The reception to Marathon has been mostly positive with some concern surrounding the game’s longevity, content and pricing. Bungie definitely has the experience to prolong a live-service game’s lifespan as it’s proven with Destiny, though some players think there’s a surprising lack of content at launch. Early impressions also express similar concerns, so we’ll have to see if Bungie sticks the landing at launch.
Marathon will officially launch on 23 September 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. A closed alpha test will take place on 23 April, which players can sign up for via the Marathon Discord. Watch the new gameplay trailer below:
