Lords of The Fallen has rustled a few feathers online and this time, it has nothing to do with the release of a new game. Instead, a recent post on the game’s official X social media account claims that it’s “carrying the torch” for soulslike games. Naturally, this brought forward plenty of unsavoury replies.
Lords of The Fallen was released in October 2023 to somewhat positive reviews, with critics at the time praising its strong gothic fantasy visuals, dual world mechanics and familiar gameplay clearly inspired by From Software’s Dark Souls, but criticism was also aimed at its confusing map layouts and lack of creativity in the subgenre. Despite some shortcomings, it’s still viewed as a good soulslike alternative if you’re looking for a something similar to From Software’s offerings.
That said, “carrying the torch” is not the term many expected to hear from Lords of The Fallen. The game’s official X account recently posted about the game’s second anniversary update, celebrating reaching 5.5 million players with a new Great Sword add-on. “Two years of carrying the torch for soulslikes. There is only one way to celebrate: a good old fashioned megabonk of our own (and plenty more goodies),” it wrote.
Most fans celebrated the news but others singled out its daring opening line, mocking it online or calling it in poor taste. “Yes because getting potential players annoyed at you when you already have a bad rep is a wonderful stance to take,” wrote one comment. Most who picked up on the proud boast quickly brought up Lies of P as the soulslike game that actually carried the torch, and we’re inclined to agree.
The account did try to save face by following the post up with: “We were tempted to back track on the rage-baity opening line here but the replies have been too creative. Nothing like a good roast during a delusional toast!” However the damage had already been done.
