The live-action One Punch Man movie is moving ahead with script rewrites being done by Rick and Morty co-creator and writer Dan Harmon. He will work alongside Heather Anne Campbell on the screenplay rewrites for the Sony Pictures project, though it doesn’t have a release date or window yet.
As revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, Dan Harmon has been hired to do script rewrites for the upcoming live-action One Punch Man movie being directed by Fast and Furious franchise director Justin Lin. Harmon is best known as the co-creator of the Adult Swim animated sci-fi comedy series Rick and Morty but he’s also credited as the creator of the popular sitcom Community. Campbell also served as an executive producer on Rick and Morty for seasons six and seven.
Venom screenwriters Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg were previously attached to write the One Punch Man movie, though it’s not known if they’re still penning the script following Harmon and Campbell’s rewrites. Little is known about the live-action project, though according to a Deadline report from 2022, Sony really wants it to kickstart a new franchise.
One Punch Man is best known for its successful 2015 anime adaptation from Madhouse, though it began as a serialised manga created by the mysterious author simply known as “ONE.” The manga is also illustrated by Yusuke Murata. It tells the story of Saitama, a down-on-his-luck hero living in a world of superheroes that fight deadly global threats. However, Saitama has the unique, incredibly overpowered ability of defeating foes with one punch.
In related news, One Punch Man season 3 is currently in the works at Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan: The Final Season studio MAPPA after initial rumours claimed that it would be animated by Studio Bones, which also adapted another one of ONE’s popular works, Mob Psycho 100.
