Instead of primarily focusing on making a proper, interconnected movie DC Universe, DC and WB are playing to the strengths that have made their successful animated features so phenomenal, by focusing on stories that they want to tell rather than building a cohesive, overall universe. That isn't to say the DCEU is dead, but rather not a major focus.
Director Todd Phillips and star, Joaquin Phoenix, are the first to be exploring this diverse choice of telling interesting stories about famous DC characters in different universes with Joker, the origin or Gotham's crown prince of crime in an alternate DC universe.
Up until now, no one was sure what to expect from the tale of failed stand-up comedian Arthur Fleck as he descends into insanity in a harsh, uncaring world, but with the release of the film's first trailer, we have a better look at the where this version of the Joker will be heading.
I was quite on the fence about this, especially as I don't care for the Joker having an origin story, but I have to say that the trailer looks more interesting than I thought it would. There's a definite sense of sadness permeating this story, as the world just seems to continue beating Arthur down before his snap sends him down the path of the Joker. Right now it's feeling less like a villains tale than that of an anti-hero, but we'll see when the final movie is released on the 4th of October, 2019.
