Hideo Kojima Was Once Asked to Make a Matrix Game

Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima was reportedly given the opportunity to work on a Matrix video game adaptation, but at the time, things didn’t work out.

According to an interview with Christopher Bergstresser, a former vice president of licensing at Konami Digital Entertainment, the Wachowski brothers approached Konami on the project, and at the time, Hideo Kojima was still part of the company.

The report claims that the Wachowski brothers were big fans of Hideo Kojima and the Metal Gear Solid series. They believed that the game developer would be the best person to work on a Matrix video game adaptation.

The interview suggests that the Wachowskis arranged a meeting with Konami in which they also brought along their concept artist for the idea. The pitch for the game was almost immediately shut down by Konami’s Kasumi Kitaue.

Aki Saito, who later ended up leaving the company to work alongside Hideo Kojima at his studio, was also part of the pitch at the time. However, Kasumi Kitaue believed that Kojima’s focus should remain on the Metal Gear Solid series. As a result of this, Konami refused to let Kojima take on another project.

Another report from a former Konami employee claims that the Konami staff were actually quite upset about the pitch being shut down by Kasumi Kitaue. In fact, the studio showed strong interest in the idea of a Matrix video game and were immensely disappointed that the project was scrapped.

All this took place in the early 2000s, so there’s likely no chance of Hideo Kojima ever working on a Matrix video game in the future. However, he did seemingly use the Matrix series as inspiration for a cut character named Chinaman in Metal Gear Solid 2. The character looked as if he ran across walls similar to how Neo runs in the movie series.
