Helldivers Movie Lands Fast and Furious Director Justin Lin
Earlier this year, PlayStation Productions and Sony unexpectedly announced a list of movies and TV shows at the CES 2025 tech conference. Apart from a planned Ghost of Tsushima anime and Horizon Zero Dawn TV series, the company also revealed that it was looking at developing Helldivers into a movie. Now, PlayStation Productions has hired Fast and Furious director Justin Lin for the role.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Justin Lin, best known for directing several entries in the Fast and Furious saga, has signed on to direct the upcoming Helldivers movie, which is finally moving forward at Sony Pictures. Lin will also produce the movie via his Perfect Storm Entertainment company, along with Hutch Parker and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan. The script has been written by Gary Dauberman, best known for the It and Annabelle horror movies.
It’s quite ironic that Helldivers is being adapted into a movie, largely because the games were directly inspired by the 1997 Paul Verhoeven movie Starship Troopers which shares similar themes and sociopolitical commentary.
Following the massive success of Helldivers 2, it seems like Sony is looking to capitalise on the game’s popularity with a movie adaptation. The description reads:
“Freedom. Peace. Democracy. Your Super Earth-born rights. The key pillars of our civilization. Of our very existence. But the war rages on. And everything is once again under threat. Join the greatest military force the galaxy has ever seen and make this a safe and free place to live.”
In related news, Sony is also working on a live-action God of War TV series with Amazon. Filming is scheduled to commence in March 2026 with casting currently underway. The TV show will adapt the Norse saga of games (encompassing 2018’s God of War and 2022’s God of War Ragnarok) though actors for Kratos and Atreus have yet to be announced.
